A good mortar and pestle?

I bought a marble mortar and pestle last week from World Market without much thought (my mistake), and it seems to be a complete piece of garbage.

The design of the pestle is such that the cross section of the grinding end is basically a half circle, and 90pc of the time it feels like I am just chasing ingredients around in the mortar. Even worse if there is any liquid, like from garlic. Not sure if I am just using it wrong, but looking around online it seems a vast majority are designed just like that.

I have in the disrant past used a ceramic laboratory mortar and pestle and it was nothing like this. The end was much flatter, like the arc of a circle, and the sides kind of fit the inside of the mortar as you rolled it around, so you would constantly be grinding.

Are a lot of these mass market mortar and pestles actually just decorative items meant to sit in the cabinetry of McMansions?
