Family Christmas Cookies questions re Margarine

Hi! Attempting to make Christmas cookies from my mother-in-law’s old recipes. She passed in 2016 so I can’t ask her so maybe someone here can help?

The recipe calls for half butter and half margarine. Personally I think margarine is gross and never use it, but I also know baking is precise.

Can anyone provide me with a reason margarine would be superior in this recipe? Or was it just an outdated attempt to make it “healthier”?

Otherwise I plan to use all butter. I can also use coconut oil or another substitute if someone has a suggestion.

Thanks!
