Knife bite on end-grain board

So when I sharpen my knife and I use it on my normal cross grain board across the grain, cutting is smooth. When I cut along the grain, the sharp knife bites a lot into the board. It makes for a very non-smooth cutting motion.

Does this happen on end-grain boards too? If so how do you deal with it?
