Molasses expanding out of container?

Hello All!

I just bought some fancy molasses at a bulk grocery place where I poured it into a provided plastic deli container. By the time I got home an hour later, the molasses had expanded enough to push the lid off and continued to foam up and pour over the sides for about another 1/2 hour.

I've been searching for an explanation with little luck - everything I've found is about beer making. I assume the molasses is bad and is fermenting but I've also read about molasses containers bulging and foaming and still being edible.

Anyone run into this? I've only ever bought molasses in the carton and have never encountered this.
