Food Microbiology

I'm a teacher assistant for a non-science majors biology course. I asked the professor and she said it would be alright to bring in some examples to show students ways people use microorganisms. Food seemed like a very accessible way to do this.

What are some cheap, easier to find, and visible to the eye things I could show them? It can't be alcoholic beverages since this is a school campus.

One of my ideas is instant bread yeast. Do you have any recommendation for the type or ingredients to look for on the packaging to find one that will be extra bubbly when activated?
