Adding tomato sauce/water to hot oil

So I seen a recipe the other day where they put maybe 3 or 4 tbsp of olive oil in a pan and fry some garlic and basil stems. The next step is to add a large can of tomatos. I've also seen similar things in different cultures to this. How is this safe? I would be so afraid of it erupting in my face. How do I make sure that won't happen lol?
