Who invented table top food serving and why did it became popular?

Out of all the serving techniques, why did serving dishes on literal table tops became popular? Why do people do it anyway? Is there some caveat out of serving food on a table top or is it just for trendy purposes only?

Edit : Sorry, vague question, i didn't mean serving food on a table top as in serving food with plates on a table top. I mean serving food by using the actual table top as a plate. You know, the trends on tiktok that somehow got trendy in some too?
