Best method for using mole paste?

I love to make mole at home using store bought paste, but I have so much trouble getting the paste to turn into sauce. I've been adding a bunch of water (enough for the final volume of the sauce) to my pot, bringing it to a simmer, then adding the paste. I always wind up chasing the paste around with a wooden spoon and smashing it up against the side of the pot to get the chunks to break down. Then I have to scrape the side of the pot and get a second spoon to scrape the paste off the first spoon back into the pot. It seems like it should be easier? The directions on the package are minimal. Any help would be much appreciated.
