How to store milk and cream for infrequent use? Or maybe a longer lasting substitute?

I occasionally like to cook or bake something that requires dairy, but it's never enough to use up a full container's worth so the remainder tends to go bad before I can make something else with it. Is there a way to store leftover dairy for long term use? Freezing it? Or maybe there's a longer lasting alternative I can use instead like canned evaporated milk?
