Boiled chestnut water?

I was recently boiling chestnuts to roast for a dessert I've been working on. I brought the water to a boil, (I always add a oinch of salt and sugar) added my scored chestnuts and simmered them for 5 minutes. When I pulled the nuts out the water smelled like tea and tasted sort of like lightly sweetened black tea with a little floral nuttiness. Is this a known thing? Is this water ever used for anything? Did I just discover a new ingredient to mess around with?
