Is there something that can make squid extremely bitter?

I ordered a squid dish at a restaurant a few weeks ago (in Spain, it was with thistle mushrooms and a butter sauce) and it had an incredibly bitter taste - it was honestly almost inedible (and it was a pretty nice restaurant, everything else was delicious)

I dismissed it as something weird in the dish, maybe the mushrooms, but just had squid with a similar bitterness served to me again (still in Spain). Has anyone else experienced this? What could it be????
