Mortar & pestle seasoning

This is my first mortar & pestle. It is granite.

I watched a couple videos that say to start the seasoning process with water and do it until the grinding surfaces are smooth. The non-grinding surfaces of this mortar & pestle are smooth and the grinding surfaces are rough.

It seems odd to me that the manufacturer would make it this way if the grinding surfaces are supposed to be smooth.
