Fresh vs Frozen vs Canned Vegetables?

I was raised to believe that I should always buy fresh vegetables whenever possible, but that probably made more sense for my parent who grew up buying directly from farmers. Nowadays, the fresh vegetables in supermarkets are shipped from around the world and not exactly farm fresh. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the frozen or canned alternatives are better, either. Does anyone have some easy rules of thumb for when to go for each option? Does this vary depending on the vegetable in question?
