Where do you keep the butter?

Help me settle an argument between my brother and I. He is adamant that I should not keep my butter on the counter but I disagree. To be fair I only keep the current stick I'm using out and it's in a covered dish. Imho it's so much better when it's spreadable. If I'm wrong please educate me
