Lotus Root (Renkon) Black Spots after Boiling?

Hello food folks,

I was boiling lotus root (my first time) like I would during hot pot and when I pulled it out it has small black spots on the exterior. The inside and holes were fine, just the perimeter! The root was firm and white when I first cut it and no marks or browning on the outside after I peeled the skin off. Any idea what is happening? Has the root gone bad?
