Are chili garlic sauce (chili first, garlic and vinegar) and sweet chili garlic sauce (made with sugar first then pickled chili and garlic) interchangeable enough to use in a BBQ sauce?

Would the pickling change the flavor profile so much that it ruins the homemade BBQ sauce? I love the plain chili garlic paste/sauce but my regular store doesn’t carry it, and I plan to add sugar to the BBQ sauce anyway. I just don’t know if the pickling changes the flavor that much. Thanks.
