[PICS] Butter knife explodes during low heat sterilization, split in half, what's that powder inside? Scared

I don't know where to ask sorry.

Direct links below. My roommate was sterilizing (submerged in simmering water) his stainless utensils like he always has for months and all of a sudden, we hear this loud explosion in the kitchen.

There's powder inside the core of the stainless butter knife (pointed in pic). Is that powder dangerous? What could have caused the explosion? Hoping the powder isn't harmful or toxic. Thanks. He cleaned up the mess.
