Onion and garlic powders. Uses?

My understanding is that onion and garlic powders in no way replace the corresponding real things in cooking.

So I'm wondering what they could add, if anything, to everyday cooking. Are they like a spice?

As an example, I sometimes like to throw in a pinch of curry powder (madras curry powder) into a bowl of noodles to make it more interesting.

I vaguely remember trying the same thing with onion powder (throwing a bit into a soup or something) and not particularly liking the result. If I remember, it just added a "heavy taste" that I didn't necessarily associate with "onions".

When following a recipe, I dutifully add onion and/or garlic powder as specified. But I don't go out of my way to creatively use it in my own cooking.

What are some uses for onion and garlic powder in everyday cooking?

(Just a note that I love fresh onions and garlic and use plenty in my regular cooking (i.e. am not shy with either of them.))
