Can I wash/rinse off whole spices at home before using them?

I recently read some articles on how whole spices (cardamom, star anise, cloves, black pepper etc) can be contaminated by insects, animal feces and hair during processing (such as when they're being laid out to dry in the open air).

Does anyone know if rinsing whole spices with water and redrying them at home will adversely the flavour or pungency of the spice?
