Paper towel alternatives? Cotton towels washable with normal laundry?

Paper towels have all kinds of applications in the kitchen. I am curious how well alternatives hold up for applications like drying food, wiping excess oil off seasoning pans, etc. for economical and environmental-friendly reasons.

Do cotton towels (bar mops, dish towels, tea towels, etc.) work well with drying food (e.g. shrimp or scallops before searing)? How about lint-free cotton for wiping excess oil off every time you clean and dry?

Would you simply toss all these towels with your regular laundry and they won't ruin the rest of your clothes if e.g. a towel was soaked with oil? I did some brief reading and it is recommended to air-dry any clothing contaminated with oil to prevent accidents in the dryer.

Honestly I have never washed any oil-tainted clothing before, so this might be a stupid question.
