10 Nintendo series that haven't had a sequel in 6+ years.

I'm going to share with you some Nintendo series that haven't had a sequel in 6+ years and the last communication on the games for the five first. I'm going to order them by series I want to return the most. The first five will have a more detailed write-up.

  1. Advance Wars - While there's four games in the "Wars" series, there's technically 12 games overall. The first game was Famicom Wars in 1988 - Game Boy Wars and Battalion Wars are also part of this series (although Battalion Wars is real time and the most different of the bunch), but I think people are most familiar with Advance Wars. The last game was in 2008 for the DS titled "Advance Wars: Days of Ruin." Interestingly enough, this game actually never released in Japan despite being made in Japan. If the series were to return it'd probably be under a different "Wars" name. Maybe "Switch Wars?"

  2. Pikmin - We did have Hey! Pikmin in 2017, a 2D side scrolling action game for the 3DS, but the last mainline game was Pikmin 3 in 2013 for the Wii. There were nine years between Pikmin 2 and 3, and this is partly because development of the game moved from the Wii to the Wii U some time in 2010 or 2011. Even so, the gap would have been large, and the gap for Pikmin 4 may be even larger with no gameplay or release date in sight. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin, stated in 2015 that Pikmin 4 was "very close to completion." In 2017, he reaffirmed that his statement in 2015 he was not referring to the Hey! Pikmin statement and said this time that the game "it is progressing." Many people thought they were holding off Pikmin 4 for the Switch after the Wii U was a commercial failure, but three years into the system's life span and we have seen nothing else regarding Pikmin 4.

  3. Kid Icarus - We had two 8-bit Kid Icarus games in 1986 and 1991, and then nothing for over 20 years (outside of a 2004 Game Boy Advance port of the original game), until Kid Icarus: Uprising in 2012. Being the first 3D game in the series, it was quite different from the last two games. It was split into really two parts: the first half of a level would be an on rails shooter, and the second half would be Pit on foot engaging in melee and mid range combat. As someone not that into on rails shooters, I actually really enjoyed these segments and appreciated that they were only about five minutes or so, so that they did not overstay their welcome. I couldn't find much information on a potential sequel of the game outside of speculation. The only thing I could find was Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., stating in 2012 that he wouldn't be making a sequel and also: "For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years." Disappointing, but at least he was clear with what he said.

  4. Punch-Out!! - Here's yet another series Nintendo brought back from a 10+ year hiatus in the late 2000s/early 2010s, just to let it die again. Punch-Out!! reemerged on the Wii after sitting the Nintendo 64 and GameCube era out, bringing a multiplayer mode and optional motion controls along with it to this new entry. It's probably a good thing it came out in the Wii's halfway point of life (2009) - if it came out any earlier, I think the motion controls would have been forced. Nothing has been discussed in terms of a sequel, but both Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! were added to Nintendo's online classic games services' in 2019 for paying subscribers.

  5. F-Zero - The last F-Zero game was F-Zero Climax for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, exclusive to Japan. In 2014, an F-Zero race track was added to Mario Kart 8, giving fans of the series hope for a sequel. In 2012, in an interview with French site Game Kult, Shigeru Miyamoto said this in response to fans wanting F-Zero back: "I am really pleased to hear Twitter’s opinion, because since the first episode on SNES many games have been made but the series has evolved very little. I thought people had grown weary of it." Shigeru Miyamoto shot down the possibility of a sequel in 2015, stating that he felt like he didn't have any great new ideas for the series, but that if they found a controller interface that's particularly suited for F-Zero, it would be a possibility in the future.

  6. Mother - The last Mother game was Mother 3 in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance, exclusive to Japan.

  7. Wario Land - The last Wario Land game was Wario Land: Shake It! (known as Wario Land: The Shake Dimension in Europe) in 2008 for the Wii.

  8. Mario Strikers - The last Mario Strikers game was Mario Strikers: Charged in 2007 for the Wii.

  9. Big Brain Academy - The last Big Brain Academy game was Big Brain Academy in 2007 for the Wii.

  10. Nintendogs - The last Nintendogs game was Nintendogs + Cats in 2011 for the 3DS.

I didn't included Metroid in the list since Metroid Prime 4 has been announced for the Switch, and we did get a remake - not a port - of Metroid 2 in 2017 for the 3DS.

Nintendo has brought back Clubhouse Games and Brain Age in the last year, so I think it's feasible for many of these "dead series" to see a revival. Pretty soon I'll be able to add Donkey Kong Country to this list since the last game was Tropical Freeze in 2014, with Retro Studios working on Metroid Prime 4 and no sequel in sight. Are there any series I missed that you'd like to see return?
