The PC launch of Phantasy Star Online 2 is a complete mess right now for all the wrong reasons

So for some reason, they decided to just launch it cold without running any kind of beta test at all, and now a ton of players can't even get the game to install or uninstall properly.

This isn't the usual kind of "bad launch". This has almost nothing to do with lag or server performance and everything to do with actually getting the game to install and patch correctly from the Microsoft Store.

Their twitter is inundated with people having issues right now.

Either the game is throwing up a ton of error codes around the Microsoft Store, or people are running into a host of bizarre issues, including:

  • The game being stuck in 720p or worse in borderless mode without editing an ini file
  • The game not installing/uninstalling right
  • The game self-deleting all 50+ gigs worth of patch/update files after a reboot
    • This may be because the game actually requires 130-ish gigabytes to install properly, instead of the advertised 70gb. It creates 50+gb worth of back-up files for each install that it then has to copy over to the install directory before deleting them. Bear in mind, the MS Store only tells users they need 11gb to install the base game.
    • This wouldn't be out of the ordinary except that the process doesn't even work properly on some machines because SEGA (or Microsoft) apparently didn't set permissions for the launcher correctly and chose a temp/backup folder that doesn't have read/write permissions in W10 by default. On some machines, the game can't actually copy update files to the install folder properly, or the copy process fails because users don't realize they need twice the amount of space for it to work right.
      • If this happens, the game will think something's wrong/corrupt with the install, so it deletes the updated files, then begins silently re-installing itself in the background. That's why the game's 50+ gigs worth of update files are suddenly gone when some people reboot or try to patch again.
      • When this occurs, you cannot uninstall the game right away because the trusted installer is already running in the background, but it doesn't tell you this. If you happen to reboot again before uninstalling, the process will repeat itself
      • On top of that, you know those temp files? They don't even delete themselves properly after a failed install, so each time you reinstall, you end up with another 50 gigs of temp files in a hidden "mutablebackups" folder that most people don't even know exists. You have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to get read/write privileges for the folder just so you can delete them. The average user will not be able to figure this out and will just be wondering why they're missing so much HDD space.

tl;dr:

  • The game is putting temp files/back-ups in a hidden folder with no default user read/write privileges, and not deleting them properly after an install. On top of that, each time the install fails, you end up with another 50 gigs of backup files you can't delete unless you know how to alter user privileges for the folder.
  • Launcher/update permission issues are causing the game to think it's corrupt, delete itself and then silently reinstall after a reboot, creating more temp file bloat and preventing users from uninstalling until the install finishes again.
  • Other people are just straight up running into random error code messages from the MS Store.
    • Also, if you have a non-standard W10 distro without the Xbox app suite, the game will not run/install at all. This is mostly a non-issue and shouldn't be a problem for the majority of users.

I'm honestly baffled because this NA release is only happening 8 years later due to someone at Microsoft clearly having a soft spot for PSO, but yet they don't seem to have done any QA at all to make sure that the game actually installs/launches properly for the majority of users.

It's like they put all their passion into announcing the game and none into making sure it actually works. I've played the Japanese version for years, and installing/uninstalling/translating through the fan-made Arks Layer launcher is completely automated, painless and idiot-proof this point. There's no reason why it should be like this for an official release.

More confusing still is why they decided to use the old Microsoft Store instead of the new Xbox service they've been pushing so hard on Windows 10 (which in my experience is 100x better). I ran into no install issues on my machine, but getting it to work on my sister's PC has been an absolute nightmare.

The shitty thing is that the game itself is great even if the graphics are dated. It's a super fluid coop action combat game with a lot of content and charm.

[EDIT: Most of these issues are directly tied to the Microsoft Store itself. The JP version used a standalone launcher and encountered none of these problems.]
