How to cook sweet potatoes in the microwave without overcooking them?

I can cook sweet potatoes in a lower watt microwave that my parent’s have just fine. When I do the same in my higher watt microwave, they always come out overcooked. I’ve adjusted the time, decreased the power level, covered and uncovered it, pierced holes in the skin, and wrapped it with a damp paper towel - nothing works.

When I buy steamable sweet potatoes with 6-7 potatoes in one bag, those cook perfectly. With one potato they skin always gets hard at the end of the 7-8 min I cook it. I have to be doing something wrong here.
