Console Owners: Would you be willing to pay for Performance Mode Patches? Why or Why Not?

Would you be open to the idea of paying for optional modes that increase framerate to 60fps at the expense of resolution/effects/etc on consoles as DLC?

To be honest, I would. Here's why:

I was extremely disappointed that the Crash/Spyro/CTR remakes ran at 30fps on all consoles, so much so that I refused to buy them. To me, those types of games just don't feel good to play at 30fps anymore; standards have changed since the 90's. The PC ports running at 60 still have me considering switching over to PC gaming.

I thought that the enhanced Pro/X consoles were designed to help with this, but support for Performance modes have been very scarce. We keep hearing excuses like "CPU bottleneck" or hardware still not being powerful enough, but after seeing a console mod of Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled running at 60fps...on Nintendo Switch...or Bloodborne being hacked to run at 60 on Pro...it's more obvious than ever that hardware was never the issue.

The real issue is probably that all the extra optimization dev time is expensive to publishers, raising their XX million dollar budgets even higher for games that can really only be sold for $60 max MSRP. Games already being too underpriced at $60 is another discussion entirely.

But here's an idea: why not let gamers subsidize that cost via paid DLC? Some type of patch sold on the console marketplace that allows access to High Performance modes of the game when you insert the disc? To me, it seems like a win-win to everyone:

  • Gamers who care about extra performance now have a way to get what they want on their platform of choice. Those who don't can ignore it at absolutely no cost to them.
  • Publishers get to satisfy fans on as many platforms as possible, recoup costs directly for the extra development time, and can even track which ones seem to really value performance specifically.
  • PC gaming still has value in being fully customizable.

I can say that I personally would buy a LOT more games on console (and feel less of a pull to PC gaming) if this happened. As long as the price is something reasonable (read: not another $60).

How about you?
