confused about what cured pork is supposed to taste like?

Tried prosciutto for the first time today and couldn't really taste anything except salt. I was raised to avoid pork, so I would've thought that the meat would be more pungent but nah. I also had mortadella, which was less salty but still lacking in any remarkable flavor. The slices I bought were expensive I think ($10 a pack).

Are prosciutto and mortadella supposed to be just salty? I really had to smack my tongue around to get a hint of any more flavor. Maybe I just watched too much Everyday Italian as a kid....
