Can I avoid large meat packers?

I've always known in the back of my mind that industrial meat processing doesn't treat their workers well. The recent news makes me want to stop eating meat. But I do love a good steak once in a while. I looked at some of the packaging from my grocery store but I can't tell where the animal was processed. Is this something an average consumer can even know? If I go to a local butcher instead of the grocery will the meat come from different places?
