How to cook with herbs without burning it?

Hi, so yesterday I attempted to cook garlic mushrooms; basically it was button mushrooms with garlic and thyme cooked in butter. I added the thyme with the mushrooms into the pan and before the mushrooms were cooked through, the thyme burnt. I had the same problem previously when grilling carrots with some other herbs.

How do I stop the burning??????
