Why are my tortillas tor-TERRIBLE

I’m using masa flour, mixing it with the ratio of water the bag recommends, using a tortilla press, and cooking them for roughly a minute on each side in a dry cast iron over medium heat. What I end up with are dry, thick, cake-like disks that don’t in the slightest resemble what I want at a taco stand. Can someone tell me what the secret is?
