Dropbox Dropping Symlinks

For you Dropbox users that use symlinks to backup folders on your system (I’ve been doing this for close to a decade), I just got this (will likely be dropping them):

Hi there,

We've improved the way we sync symlinks and wanted to let you know as this will change how symlinks show up in your account.

What's changing You’ll now see symlinks represented as files on www.dropbox.com Symlinks are similar to shortcuts that let you have 1 folder in 2 places on your device. For example, if you have a symlink in Dropbox that links to another folder in Dropbox, you’ll now see a symlink and 1 folder—not 2 copies of the same folder. Only files and folders in your computer’s Dropbox folder will be backed up For example, if you have a symlink in Dropbox that links to a folder outside Dropbox, we won’t back up that folder that's outside of Dropbox. So on www.dropbox.com you’ll just see a symlink—not a folder. Why this matters to you You have symlinks in your Dropbox account If you did not create the symlinks, they might have been created by an app that you use with Dropbox. Don’t worry—your app will keep working. When we make this change, you may see backup copies of the folders referenced by the symlinks added to your Dropbox folder
