Looking back at 007 Everything or Nothing

I decided to go back to some old games this summer. One of those games is: 007 Everything or Nothing. It is not a perfect game, the controls are clunky and a bit sensitive. But the things it does well, are rather uncommon in licensed games these days.

  • Licensing: This game features not just the likeness and Pierce Brosnan and the iconic tune, but also the voices of William Dafoe, Judi Dench, Heidi Klum and John Cleese. Consider that these days, a game would be pulled from the digital storefront after a few years. But my disc is mine to keep, and I do not even need a patch. Even more remarkable is that the game is not tied to any movie, and it was produced by EA. They still got all the star power they could.
  • Design: Instead of another first-person shooter, the designers wanted to make something more in line with the setpieces of a Bond movie. The game has stealth mechanics, hand-to-hand combat and third person shooting. There are many vehicle levels with almost as many vehicles. Somehow, the game is not a mess. The controls are a bit complex and clunky, but once you get the hang of it the fun begins. Shooting is functional, stealth is encouraged (a little bit, one mistake and the alarm goes off). Enemies are clever, forcing you to use cover wisely. Choosing the right weapons and gadgets and using them well is rewarding. Most of the vehicles have 2 or more weapons and a special ability. Levels are not too linear. Against all odds the game makes these mechanics work decently and serves up a lot of interesting scenarios with enough diversity to break up the pace.
  • Difficulty: Even on medium difficulty, you have to work for your win. I wanted to write this post because I was surprised at how well I had to play to clear a mid-game level. Enemies with good weapons will tear your health to shreds. Some sections have strict time limits. Only by learning the levels after a few retries, using the right weapons and gadgets, and using "Bond Sense" to look for special interactions can you make it through a horde of goons.
  • Score attack: The game scores your performance and grants you medals accordingly. It adds a surprising amount of replayability for a game like this. Stylish interactions with the environments (shortcuts / perfect stealth / hazard kills / hidden areas) are called "Bond Moments" and grant bonus points. Stealth kills and non-ballistic kills are worth extra points too. Speed and accuracy are rewarded as well. I would love to see this system in other action games as well.
  • Bonus: There is a co-op mode, and unlocking gold and platinum medals unlocks concept art and cheats. Have not unlocked much so far, but worth mentioning.

How many licenced games do you know that have unexpectedly good design?
