I've played quite a couple of Metroidvania's such as SoTN, Metroid Prime, and Hollow Knight, but if there's one modern metroidvania title I cannot seem to keep myself interested in, it is this game. It's a shame, because I love almost everything about it. I mean, I shed some real ass tears in the first 5 minutes. That, alone, is really impressive.
But the gameplay... oh the gameplay. It is so boring. The combat almost requires no skill. Just spam the button until they die. No strategy to how you have to take down these enemies. Like, it would not have hurt for this game to have an enemy early that maybe can only be attacked from behind or when it does an animation. The whole "it's mainly a platformer, the combat isn't meant to be a challenge or intuitive" is not a very good excuse either. Hollow Knight implemented challenging platforming as well, while also having a satisfying and deep combat system. Hell, sometimes the game would make you dance between platforming and combat to really keep you on your toes. Why does this game get a free pass? Even as a platformer-centered titled, it's not all that great. I've played platformers that have the same level of difficulty like Celeste and once again, Hollow Knight. Those game have platforming that feels good, so even if you're fucking up, you still get a rush out of figuring out how to get through a hard section. I am sure the platforming gets better as the game goes on and you unlock more abilities, but until then, that just leaves you with boring combat. I mean, how many unlocks and hours do you have to play this game until you start telling yourself "you know what, this platforming is really starting to open up." And by that point, how far are you from finishing the game? This is the reason why I have dropped this game for the second time now. Now, it is true that Hollow Knight has the same limited platforming at the beginning of the game, just like this one does, but at least in that game you still had the fun combat to keep it exciting.
I know i compared Hollow Knight a lot, but I feel it's a great example of how modern metroidvania's should be. It's one of my favorites, so I guess it is kind of the game that hold up and expect other metroidvania's to meet or, at least, get close. Ori gets so much praise from critics and fans alike, but in my experience, I feel like people adore the visuals and soundtrack so much that they just overlook the mediocre gameplay.
