Left stainless steel pot on the stove way too long, anything harmful to worry about?

I was using an old stainless steel pot to steam something, and ended up letting all the water boil out. Pot sat there heating up until I noticed I could smell something...

With non stick pans, I know they can overheat and start releasing stuff into the food. Is there anything in a similar vein to worry about if stainless steel or aluminum overheats? Maybe even just a thin layer of something harmful that can be washed off? It was hot enough that it actually started scorching and melting our counter a bit since I stupidly set it there.
