What niche games exist mostly outside the view of the mainstream, but survive due to a relatively small but committed community? What about the game keeps the players coming back?

For example, here are some games that I think meet the criteria well enough:

  • Planetside 2
  • Deep Rock Galactic
  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer

Mass Effect 3 was mainstream, but a lot of people aren't aware that the multiplayer mode amassed a cult following, with many players accruing thousands of hours. The community organized speed run leader boards and challenges. People still play it, though it is definitely now past its heyday.

PS2 and DRG are on the fringes of the mainstream consciousness, but they have relatively small active player counts so I think they count.

Probably anyone who considers themselves a gamer has probably heard of Dwarf Fortress, but very few people actually play.

There are so many games out now, there must be a bunch of games like this.
