Which wood cutting boards do you prefer?

Do you prefer endgrain or sidegrain boards? With or without juice groove? Is there a benefit to lighter colors (more hygienic for example) or doesn't matter? Also which size?

I have pretty much no idea when it comes to cooking but I want to craft some cutting boards as presents and I want to do them right. I want them to be pretty, but also perfect to use!
