Brand new wok gave weird burnt plastic smell after first use

I bought this wok: https://www.debuyer.com/en/wok-a-queue-mineral-b-1475.html

It says in the instructions to preheat it with oil. I preheated it without adding oil first. It discoloured and gave a very nasty smell that reminds me of burnt plastic. What happened to the wok and is it safe to use now?
