Can I cook the same onions I marinated the steak in and safely eat them?

Not sure what flair to use. I can change it if it needs correcting.

I'm making chaliapin steak (like from Food Wars). I cut down 3 big ol onions to coat the steaks with and let rest. Once they're done getting all their goodness, is it safe for me to cook the onions that the steak was buried in and safely eat them? Or do I gotta cut up more onions and toss the ones the steak sat in? The onions for the finished dish need a deep carmalizing so they'll be well cooked.
