Alternative to whiskey in a dessert (cranachan)?

My dad's birthday is coming up and I want to make him some cranachan, which I think he'd really like. However, he's a recovering alcoholic, and the recipe calls for soaking the oats in honey and whiskey.

I'm sure it'll really lose something without the whiskey, but all things as they are, what would be the best substitute for the whiskey here?
