I just started replaying 'The Darkness 2' and found I had forgotten just how fun the game was! The graphics are a good approximation of something hand drawn, and despite it's length the story is quite unique. The combat I feel is unmatched, utilizing each quarter of the screen for a different purpose allows for multiple styles of play.
The first game is well done to be sure, but I find the 'Hell' levels are very uncomfortable (maybe that's a testament to their quality). The graphics lean more towards realism which I think dates it a bit, although the Darkness is quite well rendered. I also have to recognize Mike Patton doing (in my opinion) a better job voicing the demon than in the sequel. The way you gathered collectibles was interesting - you collected phone numbers in game that were then dialed to unlock a reward, but numbers could also be obtained from EB games pre-order codes, hidden on signs in game, etc. Luckily GameFAQs has the pre-order and region exclusive codes archived.
