American Cheese 'best melter'

Why do so many say that American cheese is superior in foods like burgers and the like, just because it melts into a gooey texture? Yes it definitely does melt slightly better than a cheese like cheddar, but only by a fraction and does that really make it worth it when you can easily melt much nicer cheeses to an acceptable consistency whilst enjoying the benefits of the more complex flavour?
